f77 bug?

We are running 2.8bsd on nonI&D machines and as such are using Berkeley's
overlay modifications to f77.  The problem I am seeing is that the compiler
dies with "compiler error" whenever it sees an EQUIVALENCE statement.
Anybody out there have any experience with this/corrections for this?
Is this problem limited to the 2.8 overlayed code only?
