Last update: April 2026.
The Unix Heritage Society Inc. is a non-charitable non-for-profit organisation incorporated in Victoria, Australia. It provides a legal framework to deal with donations made to The Unix Heritage Society (TUHS) and to ensure that they are spent furthering the TUHS objectives.
The membership of TUHS Inc. is formed from the "TUHS team" that Warren Toomey put together to help run The Unix Heritage Society. You can find the current list of members here.
After the last annual general meeting, these people were elected to these offices:
To preserve and maintain historical UNIX artifacts, and to provide a forum for discussion of UNIX and its history.
The Unix Archive is the archive of historical UNIX artifacts. The TUHS mailing list is the forum to discuss UNIX and its history.
We chose to incorporate TUHS Inc. in Victoria, Australia as the Victorian state laws for an incorporated non-for-profit organisation only require that the secretary must be an Australian resident. Other members and public office holders do not need to reside in Australia.
Yes. As TUHS Inc. is an incorporated non-for-profit, it must ensure that its records are made public. You can follow this link to see:
The members of TUHS Inc. have set this policy for membership: you need to be invited to be a member of TUHS Inc. and your membership has to be approved by two-thirds of the existing membership.
The aim here is to ensure that we have a small set of enthusiastic volunteers to help run TUHS.
TUHS has very few expenses. We need to pay the monthly hosting fee for the TUHS server. And, in May 2030, we will need to renew the tuhs.org domain.
No, the TUHS mailing list and the Unix Archive are both freely available. If you want to be able to post messages to the TUHS mailing list, you do have to join the list as noted in the link above.
Excellent! Please e-mail them to the TUHS mailing list tuhs@tuhs.org for answers and further discussion. Even though we want to restrict TUHS Inc. membership to a small number, we still aim to be as open and transparent as possible to the people who are on the TUHS mailing list and who use the Unix Archive.
