Help needed...

Here's the story, if anybody has ideas please let me know.

We have a PDP 11/34, 256K, two RL02 drives and would like to get Unix on it
(as an experimental system for an OS class).

We have a DEC v7m tape, which boots, makes the file system, loads the root,
but any program needing any reasonable amount of memory dumps core with
Memory Fault. Small programs work, big ones fail. It won't run tar (tar40)
so we can't get the rest of the system going.

It's not the disk pack; I tried others -- same problem. Diagnostics say
the memory boards are ok.

Then we got hold of some 2.8/2.9/2.9seismo tapes from an 11/70 we HAD (it's
gone now and we don't have originals of any of the above, just 11/70 bootable
copies, with 11/70 unix binaries). With this one, we can't get restor to
work. Keeps mumbling "Mount volume 2" -- but this is only a one volume file
system dump. This tape allegedly has the 2.9 restor on it. Also tried
the v7m restor, same problem.

Any clues, anyone?
