less on the masscomp

"less" will work fine on the masscomp if you add -ltermcap
(to use the termap library with curses) to the LIBS line
in makefile.sys5

So..
cp makefile.sys5 makefile
edit makefile, locate the LIBS= line
add -ltermcap to the end of that line
and make
