cartridge tapes from Mac/IBM?

I want to write 1/4" cartridge tapes with a Mac II or IBM PC that can be
read on a Sun. I would appreciate comments on the hardware and software
requirements for doing this. Must the hardware on the micro be compatible
with Sun? Is special software necessary to write in an appropriate format,
and if so, is such software available (preferably in the public domain)?
I'd also appreciate advice on specific vendors or products for the tape
drive.
