make(1) not removing targets when interrupted

The version of make supplied with SunOS 4.0.3 doesn't remove the current
target when it is interrupted by the user, i.e., it behaves as though all
targets were dependencies of .PRECIOUS. This contradicts the
documentation and the behavior of most versions of make. Is this a known
bug? Any workarounds?
