I've also seen this occasionally. I suspect that somewhere in the startup
code someone is WRITING DIRECTLY TO THE SCREEN making the faulty assumption
that the screen is in one bit mode. If this ever starts happening repeatably,
I will switch my screen to one bit mode before starting up, so I can try to
read the message(s).
