read/write of almost any magnetic tape on a unix system

      Does any one know of a utility that can read/write different manetic tape formats
      on a unix 4.3BSD system (VAXworkstations, SUN's...)

      Is there a software company out there that has been involve in developing such
      a product???  Any hints or names will be greatly appreciated.
