Sigh.  Maybe I'm the only one in the whole world, but the problem exists 
on MY AT&T 3.2.1 system.  It's AT&T hardware, too (no coprocessor).  After 
all these reports of core dumps on AT&T unix I went back and tried the test 
program again.  It works like a charm :-(

Maybe it's dependent on what random packages are linked into the
kernal...?
