Generating an index - help

Recently, someone posted a method of generating an index.  I remember
how to define the macro to write the information to standard error:

.de IX
.tm \\$1\\$2\\$3\\$4\\$5\\$6\\$7\\$8\\$9\\n%
..

But I don't have the stuff that describes what to do with the output.  I
did have the presence of mind to print out the previous posting, but
foolishly gave it to a friend (who, of course, can't find it now).

Does someone out there have something useful?
