RC(8) UNIX Programmer's Manual RC(8)

NAME
rc - command script for auto-reboot and daemons

SYNOPSIS
     /etc/rc [ autoboot | fastboot [ powerfail ] ]

DESCRIPTION
_R_c is the command script which controls the automatic
     reboot.

When an automatic reboot is in progress, _r_c is invoked by
/_e_t_c/_i_n_i_t with the first argument _a_u_t_o_b_o_o_t and runs _f_s_c_k
with option -p to ``preen'' all the disks of minor incon-
sistencies resulting from the last system shutdown and to
check for serious inconsistencies caused by hardware or
software failure. If this auto-check and repair succeeds,
then the second part of _r_c is run.

The second part of _r_c, which is run after a auto-reboot
filesystem check succeeds and also if _r_c is invoked when a
single user shell terminates (see _i_n_i_t(8)), starts all the
daemons on the system, preserves editor files and clears the
scratch directory /_t_m_p. _S_a_v_e_c_o_r_e(8) will be run to check for
a system core dump, and, if found, save the dump in
/usr/sys. The second argument may be _p_o_w_e_r_f_a_i_l if the sys-
tem went down due to a power failure.

SEE ALSO
     init(8), reboot(8)

BUGS
After making changes to the root file system, the system
must be rebooted to keep the incore copy of the super-block
from corrupting the newly computed super-block.

It should be possible to print a message about power failure
     much earlier than from /etc/rc.
