SYSLOGD(8) BSD System Manager's Manual SYSLOGD(8) NNAAMMEE ssyyssllooggdd - log systems messages SSYYNNOOPPSSIISS ssyyssllooggdd [--ff _c_o_n_f_i_g___f_i_l_e] [--mm _m_a_r_k___i_n_t_e_r_v_a_l] [--pp _l_o_g___s_o_c_k_e_t] DDEESSCCRRIIPPTTIIOONN SSyyssllooggdd reads and logs messages to the system console, log files, other machines and/or users as specified by its configuration file. The op- tions are as follows: --ff Specify the pathname of an alternate configuration file; the de- fault is _/_e_t_c_/_s_y_s_l_o_g_._c_o_n_f. --mm Select the number of minutes between ``mark'' messages; the de- fault is 20 minutes. --pp Specify the pathname of an alternate log socket; the default is _/_d_e_v_/_l_o_g. SSyyssllooggdd reads its configuration file when it starts up and whenever it receives a hangup signal. For information on the format of the configu- ration file, see syslog.conf(5). SSyyssllooggdd reads messages from the UNIX domain socket _/_d_e_v_/_l_o_g, from an In- ternet domain socket specified in _/_e_t_c_/_s_e_r_v_i_c_e_s, and from the special de- vice _/_d_e_v_/_k_l_o_g (to read kernel messages). SSyyssllooggdd creates the file _/_v_a_r_/_r_u_n_/_s_y_s_l_o_g_._p_i_d, and stores its process id there. This can be used to kill or reconfigure ssyyssllooggdd. The message sent to ssyyssllooggdd should consist of a single line. The message can contain a priority code, which should be a preceding decimal number in angle braces, for example, `<5.>' This priority code should map into the priorities defined in the include file <_s_y_s_/_s_y_s_l_o_g_._h>. FFIILLEESS /etc/syslog.conf The configuration file. /var/run/syslog.pid The process id of current ssyyssllooggdd. /dev/log Name of the UNIX domain datagram log socket. /dev/klog The kernel log device.
