.TH HOSTMAP 5 .SH NAME hostmap \*- host name-number map .IX "\*ihostmap\*r file" .IX "\*ihostmap.bin\*r file" .SH DESCRIPTION \*i/etc/net/hostmap\*r is the source for the host name-number mapping used by the network library (\*ilibnet\*r(3)), and \*i/etc/net/hostmap.bin\*r is a binary version of it, which is maintained by .I mkhost(1) and .I prhost(1), interrogated by .I host(1) and .I net(1) and used by many functions in the network library. .PP \*iHostmap\*r consists of a number of network and host entries, each on one line. Lines are logically terminated by semicolons; subsequent text is treated as commentary and is ignored. .PP Each entry is a type designator, followed by a name, followed by a number. The number can be followed by a list of more names (aliases). White space (spaces and tabs) separates the type designator, the names, and the number. The type designator is one of \*(OQnet\*(CQ or \*(OQhost\*(CQ, indicating that the entry maps a network name (or names) to a network number, or a host name (or names) to a host number. The \*(OQhost\*(CQ designator is optional and is usually omitted. .PP Upper or lower case may be used. Internally, all information is stored in lower case. .PP Each name may consist of a non-null sequence of the following characters: .nf .sp the letters \*(APa\*(AP through \*(APz\*(AP the digits \*(AP0\*(AP through \*(AP9\*(AP the dash \*(AP-\*(AP .sp .fi A name cannot be longer than 24 characters. .PP Each network entry appears as .nf .sp \*bnet\*i name number[,capability] [nickname ...]\*r .sp .fi A network number is a small, non-negative, decimal integer. The capability is optional and is a new addition to the host map. It is a sixteen bit quantity and may be expressed in octal or decimal. Currently, only the low octal digit (i.e., low three bits) is used to indicate the addressing format for the network. The value 0 indicates normal .I hoi/imp notation. One (01) indicates CHAOS style octal addresses and two (02) signifies dialup hosts. If the capability is omitted, zero is used. .PP The host entries appear as .nf .sp [\*bhost\*r] \*iname address,network[,capability] [nickname ...]\*r .sp .fi The .I address is expected to be in the standard .I hoi/imp notation or (see the description of network addressing formats above) may be a single octal or decimal number or a string of dial digits (up to 24 may be stored). .I Network may be either a network name (which must have previously appeared in a network entry) or a number. The capability is also a sixteen bit quantity. Currently, no meaning has been assigned to it. .PP The first host entry should be: .nf .sp anyhost 0/0,0 .sp .fi The official name for a host must be the initial name in the first entry for the host number. .PP Host numbers which correspond to IMP ports which are shared between more than one actual host have the official name for one of the hosts entered as an alias. .PP The format of \*ihostmap.bin\*r is: .PP A header of four words which contain the number of network entries, the number of host entries, the number of characters used to store network and host names and the number of characters used to store dial digits. Following this are the tables themselves, appearing in the same order as their respective counts. .PP Each network entry contains the index (into the string buffer) of its primary and alias names, its capability word, the index of the next network in the list (for searching), the index into the host table of the first host on the network and the number of known hosts on the network. .PP The host entries are ordered by network. Each contains an index to the primary and alias names, the binary host address and its capability word. .PP The names are organized into a string table. Each network or host entry contains an index into this table, which is the index of the first character of the primary name. Aliases follow the primary.
