Since "sqrt thing" is really a single object, you
often don't need braces around it, although there
may well be braces around "thing" itself.
For example, you can say
  .EQ
  1 over sqrt {ax sup2 +bx+c}
  .EN
to produce
.EQ
1 over sqrt {ax sup 2 +bx+c}
.EN
Does the input
   .EQ
   e sup sqrt {pi x}
   .EN
produce the same output as
   .EQ
   e sup {sqrt {pi x}}
   .EN
Answer yes or no.
