Funny you mention this: I just tried this an hour ago.

But no joy: the SD card images are all for armv6 (Pi 1 & 2), but I have
the Pi 3 which is aarch64.  And as far as I know it cannot boot from USB
storage.

How did you do it, if you have a Pi 3 ?

I thought FreeBSD had pi3 -current snapshots...  If not, a custom image with NanoBSD or crochet isn't hard to knock together.
