dump is non-portable. In general, you can only restore to the same
kind of system as you write to.

RedHat pulled a fast one on that.... RHEL 4 cannot read dumps created by any RHEL4 that has *any* updates..... oh joy was that fun to find out on a machine with no internet access.....
