Thanks, it was a long read but enjoyable.

I'm not a fan either.  The exceptions Joe introduces above are more of a
simpler syntax for handling return codes.  He gives the expanded
equivalent at one point.

I also liked his enthusiam for ‘abandonment’, similar to a BUG() macro.
