Maybe Eric Allman can comment in detail. But, maybe
it was part of the work that Prof. Mike Harrison and
his research group in UCB CS did when they cracked the Adobe
Postscript Type 1 format. This little-known fact was
the first step in making Postscript Type 1 files
an open format.
