I have exciting news! Thanks to the efforts of Al Kossow, Thalia
Archibald, and surely others, UNIX Program Generic Issue 3 as issued by
the UNIX Support Group is not only preserved but up and running:

https://www.tuhs.org/Archive/Distributions/USDL/Coultier_USG_PG3/
The above links are PG3 in the UNIX tree and archive respectively. The
former files are the machine readable source and configuration for the
release, extracted from the latter tape images originally provided on
bitsavers.org. The README gives several details of their extraction
and also included are two .ini files for setting these up in SimH's PDP-11
simulator.
This document is relevant to the installation if you wish to try it
by hand:

Several other relevant documents for various PG versions can be found in
the USG library as well. Included with the tapes and scripts is a link
to the UNIX Programmer's Manual as published for this release. Between
all of this it should be reasonable to make quick use of USG PG 3.
There are lots of goodies to be found. Program Generic Issue 3 features
the earliest published examples of semaphore and message IPC, as well as
the runlevel-based init that featured in later commercial releases.
Unfortunately the manpage sources aren't in this bunch, but I am
diligently working on a manpage restoration of first Issue 2 (on a
substrate of the V6 manual) and then Issue 3 on top of that, both of
which will be shared here.
Enjoy! I'll put consolidated findings in the wiki once diffs of both
manuals and sources are complete, but there's nothing stopping others
from plundering this new rich source of UNIX history!
