I wasn't privy to that particular problem, but I do remember that some
earlier versions had poor quality SMP support and that messed with the
product I worked on at AT&T with respect to performance.  Like I
mentioned the product I worked on ate a whole Vax and really needed
multiple CPUs to work well.  When they fixed SMP in later versions the
situation improved for the product.
