This isn't an exact answer to your question but in 1978(?) I
did some contracting for a place in Santa Barbara that had
just accepted delivery of a VAX 11/780 with 256K (!!!) of
RAM. It ran VMS, not Unix, and was barely a single user
system.

They soon added another 512K and it made a miraculous
improvement.
