Thanks to everybody who responded.

After a waitpid() in the signal handler, all is good.
Never realised that you could do that in a signal handler!
With that, it runs a lot longer before I need to restart something :-)
Strange thing though is that I need to do e.g. a ping from bsd to $world 
to keep things going. If not, it keeps running but won't respond anymore 
to network traffic.
