While the Morris Worm certainly gave a lot of press to such security 
issues, the problems with gets buffer overruns were well know before 
that.
Those of us who worked with UNIX security issues had found people trying 
to exploit these on local scale (gets predates the internet deployment 
by quite some time),
if not just to obtain access, but at least to crashdisrupt system 
operations.
