I asked, and sent the longer reply in private email.  The short answer is
"The second getLink call is really in the machine code (two JSRs to getLink 
at 074556 and 074602 with the same argument, which V7 cc never merged), 
and the r3 is just the compiler parking the first result during the 
comparison, which the decompiler rendered as a register variable rather 
than folding it back into the if."

The code appears to be full of horrid "goto", too.
