ISC 2.2/Bell Tech blit card problems

I have just installed ISC's X11R3 on my system with the 2.2 kernel and a Bell
Technologies blit card.

The installation went fine and everything appears OK until I try to fire it up.

When I type xinit, the server startup messages come onto the screen and then
it appears to hang. If I switch to another virtual console I then get an error
message that says:

XIO: fatal IO error 32 on X server "??" : Broken pipe after 0 requests
( 0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
The connection was probably broken by a server shutdown or KillClient

Nothing ever gets displayed on the blit monitor. DOS test programs show that
the blit card and monitor work.

ps then shows that Xwge :0 is still running, this is the server process. I am
unable to kill it and have to reboot (because another attempt to start up fils
because of the existing server), which causes file system sync'ing
problems since Xwge doesn't die, and /usr is not unmounted during the shutdown.

I have checked all the hardware settings I can think of. Is there any special
incantation or magic that needs to be worked here - file permissions ( suid??)
or anything.
Thanks in advance for any help
Jim
