3862/ix 2.2 + make + VPATH

I've heard people claim that VPATH is an undocumented feature in
System V.? make, but I can not make it work (at least not like gnumake
and 4.3BSD makes). Looking at the output of 'strings /bin/make' I see
the string '3.2 LAI System V NFS 3.2/V3' several times.
Does this means those of us with 386/ix 2.2 really have a BSD derived
version of make. I've tried Sun's make, but while it also has VPATH compiled
into the executable, it does not seem to work either.

Could someone with source code tell me why VPATH is in the executable,
but does not work. (is it a cruel joke?)

Did VPATH make it into the V.4 version of make ?
