As I recall it, the Master/Mister practice was _not_ parallel to
the Mistress (Mrs) / Mistress (Miss) practice;  it marked age
rather than marital status.  Call me Master, call me Mister, just
don't call me Maitreya.

As this really has very little to do with comp.unix.wizards, I have
