If the spines aren't too fragile...there is always just brute forcing it and going page by page on a flatbed.  Takes time but thats how I do my stuff non-destructively.  There are also those overhead projector camera platform things, dunno what they're called, but an arts org in town has one and we used it for archiving copies of a local music magazine.
