Ok, it definitely sounds like the v6tar source is around somewhere so
if someone could point me in the right direction...
I've only seen the binary, and I can't remember where I got it.

It's part of v7. It's not really an independent artifact,
though. It's v7's tar.c linked against a compatibility library,
all compiled with v7's compiler.
